We left the lovely Key West on the 8th April and started our drive back over the keys. We were heading for Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach with the plan to stop. The weather was awful so we kept plodding on through, well Brett kept on driving and I dozed, read the map, sang songs and read! We had satellite radio which was a real treat so we could tune in to the UK's Radio 1.
Our drive back across the Keys really was very nice and well worth doing . The Keys are worth a visit but i reckon as an add on to another holiday. If you do it, do the drive from Miami on Highway 1.
We basically drove the East Coast of Florida and stopped at 'Faulty Towers' hotel at Cocoa Beach. It took us about an hour to find our pre-booked motel so it was about 10pm when we arrived. Brett had made all the booking arrangements for this one so I hadn't seen the motel I didn't know the name of it until we arrived!
Now, there are 2 versions to this story....my version and Bretts. If Brett ever puts pen to paper you will here his, if not this is my version of events.....
After getting through the security gates, we were greeted by what i would describe as a long haired troll with no teeth (Brett says I'm being mean, I think I was being quite complimentary!) but seriously she was from the troll family. She was so pleased to see us, it was as though she hadn't had guest in a long time. Some people may say I have an over active imagination but already my mind is ticking, scaring myself silly, with the gangs across the road, the empty car park and high security and now the scary troll that hasn't any other guests for a long time.
We finally got our key and headed to our room, it seemed OK though. I love to read the hotel info to see whats what. So Brett did his usual, tuned straight in to the sports channel and me to the hotel info. First page in bold...PLEASE READ so I do...Check you have double locked your door, check before leaving your room that no one is lurking, do not open the door to strangers, if they say they are from the front desk call us first as its unusual for us to visit your room, check your balcony and make sure no one is there and that your door is locked, make sure your car alarm is in place etc etc...well buy this point I'm freaking out thinking we're gonna get kidnapped or worse. Brett dragged me out of the motel fearing for my life to the nearest bar so I would have a few beers and go straight to sleep. We ventured in to the hood, had our beers and headed home.
I got bitten the moment I went back in to the room and was convinced it was fleas or bedbugs and was awake all night, so of course Brett was too! I couldn't wait to leave that motel. Brett thought it was perfectly fine. Looking back now maybe I went a bit OTT but I had gone from 5* to -1*. I think Brett deserves a medal! Fingers crossed as time goes by I will get used to staying in these motels.
